As the son of a winemaker, M. Schmitt has always dealt with vineyard
work. Today he is the owner and a wine grower on 12 hectares
of vines in Alsace.
In 1996 he bought a belt tying machine. This was a new process
as the vegetation was lifted in a delicate manner with the flexible
belts and using biodegradable staples.
However, the tying machine was not efficient enough, and when
the manufacturer closed down, Modeste SCHMITT developed and improved
the machine with the final result in 2007 of being able to tie
4 hectares per day in high and wide vines.
The simplicity of tying became Modeste SCHMITT’s obsession, and
he found indeed an easy and reliable tying system for which he
filed a patent in 2008. Publication took place on August 14,
2009.
After testing and validation of 5 prototypes in 2008, 16 machines
worked already in 2009, to the satisfaction of their users, in
Alsace, in the Champagne region and in Corsica.
